OSCRE's Environmental Data Standard
now includes Water
  1. Energy was published in 2023 with 5 use cases with interface specifications for 4 data exchanges.
  2. Water has been drafted and industry review and feedback has been conducted.
  3. Water will be published following approval by the OSCRE Board, scheduled for September 24th
  4. Water has been combined with Energy in the same 5 environmental data use cases.
  5. Waste is under consideration as a future project.
Highlights of the Water Data Standards Project
  1. The same 5 use cases developed for Energy apply to Water with some variation in the details.
  2. Energy took 6 months to develop - very fast in itself - Water took 4.
  3. Mirroring the 5 Energy use cases makes it easier to implement Energy and Water together.
  4. Major reporting platforms ask for both Energy+Water - combined use cases support this.
  5. The business case for implementing Water adds value beyond Energy, including:
  • Measuring ROI on capital investment in projects impacting water.
  • Developing the business case for water reclaimation systems.
  • Improving attractiveness of assets to investors with ESG-focused funds.
  • Mitigating risk of financial penalties and lack of water supply.
  • Simplifies baselining water use and monitoring performance.
  • Anticipating information needed for insurance and underwriting where water reslience is a factor.

Industry Leadership and Collaboration.  The OSCRE Environmental Data Standards are the result of a collaboration of leading companies and industry associations. Together they are developing the standards to improve environmental data management and reporting. Who's participating in the project?

Why These Industry Leaders are Collaborating? These industry leaders are sharing their perspectives and collaborating to develop solutions to one of the most critical challenges facing our industry today - better data to capture real estate’s impact on the environment.  Real estate organizations need to move quickly to develop an effective approach to managing environmental data. That need for speed impacts how you collect, report and analyze data. You have an opportunity to accelerate your progress towards better strategies and practices for environmental data management and decision making in a platform-agnostic approach.
