OSCRE’s Industry Data Model is a solid framework that offers your organization a streamlined and consistent approach while easing  the flow of information with your business partners. You may need only a subset of the OSCRE Standards to get you going. The following are some useful tips on choosing which OSCRE Standards to start out with and how to proceed.

  1. Data Model and Integration Points. Ideally, start by looking at your whole data model and where the points of integration are within your company and with your business partners – either those that provide information to you or others that depend upon you to provide information.
  2. Which Business Processes? Identify the primary business processes you want to enable with information exchanges. For example, you might start with Lease Transactions, knowing you might expand to include Occupancy Cost Management or Portfolio Reporting at a later stage.
  3. How Many Sources? It will also help to look at where the information will be coming from and going to for you to assess the extent of the application of the standards – multiple "systems of record" are common.
  4. Think About Real Estate Data Management and Governance. It’s rare these days for anyone to be an island of information. With dependence on others and their sources, it's important to plan how information will be collected, aggregated, and exchanged. The OSCRE Standards are specifically designed to help you manage that process. Data governance practices are also getting alot of attention. Think strategically about how both data management and data governance will be part of your implementation plan.
